﻿{"id":9892,"date":"2021-02-15T13:52:22","date_gmt":"2021-02-15T13:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klassacademy.com\/?p=9892"},"modified":"2021-02-15T14:24:50","modified_gmt":"2021-02-15T14:24:50","slug":"teamwork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.klassacademy.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/15\/teamwork\/","title":{"rendered":"Teamwork"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The vast majority of us, at some time in our lives, have been involved with a team; perhaps a sports team, a musical group, the cast of a play, or a project team at work.&nbsp; Whether we were aware of it or not, we have probably learned the value of <strong>teamwork<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 <strong>Helen Keller<\/strong> (American Author)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>4 unique human endowments <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In his book <em>7 Habits of Highly Effective People<\/em>, Stephen Covey calls his sixth \u2018habit\u2019<strong> \u2013 Synergize<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>\u201cthe miracle habit<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The dictionary defines it as combining or coordinating the activity of two or more people to produce a joint effect greater than the sum of their separate effects).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey says: &#8220;\u2026the highest forms of synergy focus the <strong>four unique human endowments<\/strong> of self-awareness, conscience, independent will, and creative imagination. \u2026 What results is almost miraculous!&nbsp; We create new alternatives \u2013 something that wasn\u2019t there before.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I like to think that <strong>with an effective team, we can achieve more<\/strong> with the same amount of effort.&nbsp; Sounds appealing, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey defines synergy as:  &#8220;\u2026<strong>producing a third alternative \u2013 not my way, not your way, but a third way that is better than either of us would come up with individually<\/strong>.&nbsp; It\u2019s the fruit of mutual respect \u2013 of understanding and even celebrating one another\u2019s differences in solving problems, seizing opportunities.&nbsp; Synergistic teams and families thrive on individual strengths so that the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts.&nbsp; Such relationships renounce defensive adversarialism (1+1=1\/2). They don\u2019t settle on compromise (1+1= 1 \u00bd or merely cooperation (1+1=2).&nbsp; They go for creative cooperation (1+1=3 or more).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.&#8221; <\/em>\u2013 <strong>Michael Jordan<\/strong> (the most talented basketball player of all time)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how do we go about creating an effective team?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Creating a Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After the recognition that we can be more productive working with others, we can move forward to set-up a team.&nbsp; We can start with a complex project charter and create detailed team definitions, or we can keep things simple, have a meeting, and agree on the objective. &nbsp;No matter how complex the project or the size of the team, spend a little time to define the following: &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-family: Montserrat; font-size: 16px; color: black;\"><li>Project goals<\/li><li>Timeline<\/li><li>Ground rules<\/li><li>Individual roles<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Normally, at the start, everyone is excited, and on good terms.&nbsp; Whether we are forming the team to win a football competition, install a new production line, increase sales by 50%, or design a new logo, everyone should be aligned with a <strong>common objective<\/strong>, recognise the purpose and be highly motivated!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIf everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.&#8221; <\/em>\u2013 <strong>Henry Ford<\/strong> (Industrial pioneer)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Team development process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Bruce Tuckman\u2019s model proposes that all 5 phases are necessary and inevitable for a team to grow, to face up to challenges, to tackle problems, to find solutions, to plan work, and to deliver results. These phases are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-family: Montserrat; font-size: 16px; color: black;\"><li>Forming<\/li><li>Storming<\/li><li>Norming<\/li><li>Performing<\/li><li>Adjourning<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"568\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/test.klassacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Picture1.png\" alt=\" Team effectiveness\" class=\"wp-image-9894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.klassacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Picture1.png 568w, https:\/\/test.klassacademy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Picture1-300x174.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Still the model is valid today, and generally teams must go through each phase before reaching that high efficiency that we all strive for!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhen we all help one another, everybody wins.&#8221; <\/em><strong>\u2013 Jim Stovall<\/strong> (Writer)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few things we can consider to get us through that storming phase as quick as possible, and moving on into a functional and performing team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>From Storming to Norming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Being in a team is like being in a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After <strong>forming<\/strong> the team, we then start working together. &nbsp;&nbsp;The initial feelings of excitement can wear off and reality kicks-in!&nbsp; We can become aware of other people\u2019s characters and traits, and that can be difficult.&nbsp; <strong>Personalities may clash<\/strong>.&nbsp; Team members might disagree over how to complete a task or voice their concerns if they feel that someone isn\u2019t pulling their weight.&nbsp; They may even question the authority or guidance of group leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to remember that most teams experience conflict. <strong>Disagreements are normal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Some teams try and skip over the storming stage or avoid conflict at whatever cost. &nbsp;Avoidance usually makes the problem grow until it blows up. &nbsp;So, it\u2019s important to recognize conflicts and resolve them as early as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also important to remember that <strong>we are all different<\/strong>! &nbsp;And also, <strong>Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.<\/strong>&nbsp; When we accept the fact that \u201cother people\u201d are different, and have a better understanding of those differences, then it becomes easier to manage the stresses and anxieties that can so often fuel the fire when conflict arises.&nbsp; I encourage you to spend some time to understand the characters in your team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-family: Montserrat; font-size: 16px; color: black;\"><li>What motivates them?<\/li><li>What stresses them?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Practice and develop your <strong>\u201cCognitive empathy\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 which is about our ability to identify and understand other people\u2019s emotions.&nbsp; Listen to your team members!&nbsp; <strong>Listening<\/strong> and <strong>open communication<\/strong> are perhaps the most important skills which should be fostered in your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know.\u201d <\/em><strong>\u2013 Carl Rogers<\/strong> (Psychologist)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Team Building Exercise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The team building process is constant and progressive.&nbsp; But to accelerate the forming process, it\u2019s good to take a little time away from that all important project, and do something a little bit different.&nbsp; As well as further motivating the team, it can also improve team dynamics, communication and productivity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-family: Montserrat; font-size: 16px; color: black;\"><li>Get everyone to take a personality test: <a href=\"https:\/\/my-personality-test.com\/personality-type-indicator?gclid=CjwKCAiAsaOBBhA4EiwAo0_AnODBG1yIYe1g8t5i5vHOKPiiAxOaUTIej1oO31ksaJtb-KjvdVdsExoCUp4QAvD_BwE\"><strong>Myers-briggs<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truity.com\/test\/enneagram-personality-test\"><strong>Enneagram<\/strong><\/a><strong>.&nbsp; <\/strong>There are plenty of free tests on-line.<\/li><li>Arrange a meeting, where everyone has 10-15 minutes to presents their own personality.<ul><li>What am I like\u2026?<\/li><li>What are my traits?<\/li><li>What motivates me?<\/li><li>What stresses me?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone becomes a little more aware of who they are, and their own character.&nbsp; But, more importantly, they learn about their team members.&nbsp; Through understanding, we can take steps to improve ourselves as well as utilise each other\u2019s skills and capabilities, for the benefit of the team!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTrue greatness will be achieved through the abundant mind that works selflessly &#8211; with mutual respect, for mutual benefit.\u201d&nbsp; <\/em><strong>&#8211; Stephen R. Covey<\/strong><em> (Educator, Author, Businessman, and Keynote Speaker)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective <strong>collaboration<\/strong> is the key to build a high-performing team. &nbsp;However, this seemingly simple principal is often easier said than done. &nbsp;Constructing a <strong>cohesive<\/strong> team that can work together in <strong>harmony<\/strong> is not an easy feat. &nbsp;&nbsp;If you want to build and sustain a high-performing team, learn from the four tips that I list below, to cultivate a collaborative environment in your workplace. &nbsp;But, first, start with self-awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>Start with self-awareness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as understanding the other team members, take one step backwards!&nbsp; How many times have you heard \u201c<strong>it all starts with self-awareness<\/strong>\u201d?&nbsp; Take a look at yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We all differ in our thinking skills, and we all have different personalities and character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Certainly, as a young engineer, I didn\u2019t spend too much time thinking about character assessment or psychology.&nbsp; I just tried to find a way with colleagues with my own <strong>collaborative approach<\/strong> \u2013 forming relationships with compromise, consideration, acceptance.&nbsp; Understanding yourself is the start of understanding other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When we understand other people, we can make allowances for their deficiencies, and make use of their talents! After all, we all have our strengths and weaknesses \u2013 don\u2019t we?&nbsp; We must put own egos to one side and focus on the what the team is trying to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTeamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision.\u201d <\/em><strong>\u2013 Andrew Carnegie<\/strong> (Industrialist)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2>4 Tips on how to form a good-team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. MISSION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that the team is <strong>aligned<\/strong> with the same mission.&nbsp; Write it down, as a team!&nbsp; Everyone should understand the objective, when it needs to be delivered, and what the benefits are.&nbsp; If everyone is aligned, then there is a higher chance that the team is going to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that everyone is aware of their <strong>roles<\/strong> and <strong>responsibilities<\/strong>. &nbsp;Setting measurable goals with a solid timeline will help team members to stay on track and hit their objectives on-time. &nbsp;It will also avoid misunderstandings and prevent double work if there is a good understanding of what each team-member is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. DIVERSITY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Each person within a team possesses a unique character, distinctive skills, experience, and ideas. &nbsp;Diversity can be very powerful to enrich the team\u2019s perspectives.&nbsp; <strong>Spend time to understand the characters <\/strong>and personality traits of the team members.<strong>&nbsp; <\/strong>Make a team building exercise like the one described in this article, or customise your own.&nbsp; Managers can identify team members characters and key strengths, and find out the best way to accommodate them.&nbsp; Team members will understand each other better, empathise and utlise each other\u2019s skills and capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. COMMUNICATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep talking!<strong>&nbsp; Open communication<\/strong> is the key to good teamwork. Without clear communication, misunderstandings are likely to happen. &nbsp;With so many collaborative tools available in these times, then there is no reason or excuse not to communicate.&nbsp; Define the communication tools and methods for the team \u2013 and use them.&nbsp; Without good communication, the team is going nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether we are starting a new team or working with an established one, whether we are starting a new project or having difficulty keeping an existing one on track, it is never too late to <strong>try to put these principles into practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One final quote from Stephen R. Covey\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Invest a little time in forming the team in the first place, and the benefits will be evident when the team starts performing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><div class=\"gdlr-space\" style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I like to think that with an effective team, we can achieve more with the same amount of effort.
